This site aims to expose the secrets of the vibrant Melbourne night life to residents and visitors. We strive to provide reviews of bars and restaurants only after we have been to them and experienced the place for ourselves.

We have mapped the bars and restaurants reviewed so as to take the hassle out of finding the venue and to assist in the successful planning of a night out. Also we offer some Chasers to help plan a night out where we suggest several places to experience in an evening.

Finally, please feel free to leave a comment or email us and challenge our reviews or to tell us about somewhere new. We are always looking for new places to experience.

Review:

Straight off the bat Lucky Coq is owned by the same people that own Bimbo’s, and in most aspects the two venues offer a similar experience. Lucky Coq should however be experienced in its own right as it has its own unique take on the theme.

The interior of Lucky Coq is very quirky, relying heavily on the dim lighting and playing heavily on the “Coq” theme (yes the name is intentional). There is also certainly a heavy 1950′s theme running through the place with a lot of the furniture true to the era, all of which adds to the feeling that the place doesn’t take its self too seriously. The building its self offers an abundance of nooks and crannies offering a surprisingly large amount of privacy, to relax into and watch the night go by.

The food is certainly a talking point and, like Bimbo’s, it prides itself on its pizza menu and it is certainly worth having one if you are in the mood. The Pizza’s are some of the nicest and simplest in Melbourne, offering different flavours in pizzas to the “usual standard” offered at most places. Beer lovers will also not be disappointed as there is a good range of local beers on tap offering a wide range of flavours to suit all desires.

Final Thoughts:

Lucky Coq offers somewhere for people to lay back and catch up without being imposed upon. It tries to recapture the essence of Bimbo’s, but is as so often the case these days…if you want Bimbo’s, take the time to go to Bimbo’s.

Pro’s:
+ Large venue offering lots of space to move about.
+ Food menu is definitely worth trying
Con’s:
- Sort of venue you shouldn’t go to when not in the mood
- Even though its big it can become VERY packed

Score:

Atmosphere: 6
Service: 7
Menu: 8
Cost: 7
