This site aims to expose the secrets of the vibrant Melbourne night life to residents and visitors. We strive to provide reviews of bars and restaurants only after we have been to them and experienced the place for ourselves.

We have mapped the bars and restaurants reviewed so as to take the hassle out of finding the venue and to assist in the successful planning of a night out. Also we offer some Chasers to help plan a night out where we suggest several places to experience in an evening.

Finally, please feel free to leave a comment or email us and challenge our reviews or to tell us about somewhere new. We are always looking for new places to experience.

Review:

Located towards the edge of the CBD The Workshop is an island (or maybe oasis) of refuge for the travelling punter, as its industrial feel and happening atmosphere makes everyone feel welcome. The design of the bar is the main focal point with the inspiration coming from the building’s past life (a motorcycle workshop) shining though as there is even still a vice attached to the bar. A benefit of this design is the many different seating arrangements possible; with some booths behind the bar providing intimate seating, a beer garden in the shell of the old building providing seating for small groups and large couches and tables in front of the bar for those larger groups.

This layout in conjunction with a wide selection of drinks and light meals during the day means that there are always people inside enjoying themselves. With all these people in on the secret it can get quite busy and they have known to be full. I find it a place that is great at the start of the night with friends to get together and set the tone for the rest of the night, be it chilling and killing time or grooving along to the beats. Depending on what night you visit you will hear a wide variety of music, from funk to hip hop and breaks to drum and bass. Therefore if you are looking for something non-mainstream to dance to; you’ve found it.

Final Thoughts:

The Workshop brings across a very community feel through its support of local artists (both musically and exhibitions) and this gives the feeling of a local, but cooler.

Pro’s:
+ Atmosphere
+ Different music styles
+ Seating Versatility
Con’s:
- Odd architecture can lead to cramped standing room
- Small dance floor
- Not a huge range of beer on tap
