This site aims to expose the secrets of the vibrant Melbourne night life to residents and visitors. We strive to provide reviews of bars and restaurants only after we have been to them and experienced the place for ourselves.

We have mapped the bars and restaurants reviewed so as to take the hassle out of finding the venue and to assist in the successful planning of a night out. Also we offer some Chasers to help plan a night out where we suggest several places to experience in an evening.

Finally, please feel free to leave a comment or email us and challenge our reviews or to tell us about somewhere new. We are always looking for new places to experience.

Review:

Situated above the popular Double Happiness and actually owned by the same person; New Gold Mountain feels like a more higher class cocktail bar than its sibling below it. Its decor has been selected with more care, with a different theme for the first and second level and with a smaller interior and unadvertised entrance, making it feel all the more exclusive. However no matter how exclusive it makes you feel in reality due to the small size of the place it can become a standing room only affair very quickly. In this sense it will make you glad that the entrance is so unassuming lest more drinkers discover its refreshing cocktails.

New Gold Mountain goes with the school of less is more and gives you a honed down cocktail list where there is no weak link, all at the very reasonable price of $16 each. This may be where the reasonable prices end however as if you came here for cheap drinks then maybe you’re coming here for the wrong reasons. They have an extensive liquor list where it is possible to choose the amount of poison you require: 30, 250, 500 or 700ml. The reason for the such large sizes is that New Gold Mountain offers bottle keep, where bottle storage is free and there is no time limit to how long they will hold onto the bottles for, mind you with a rather large mark-up compared to retail prices of course.

All this works towards making you feel like you belong in this bar, that you are a regular with your own personal stash of booze and that you are in on a secret which the rest of the drinking plebs are yet to discover. This is exactly the image most cocktail bars try to give out, but few succeed like New Gold Mountain does.

Final Thoughts:

A rare gem in Melbourne’s bar scene, New Gold Mountain gives the feelings of exclusivity without itself being exclusive. The cocktails are great to boot.
