Review:
If you are expecting from its name that Black Pearl will be a bar filled with rum drinking pirates and their wenches…or worse yet themed on a particular Disney franchise, you will be disappointed. Black Pearl is actually a stylish, multi-award winning cornerstone of the Melbourne bar scene and has been for about the past ten years. It has been nominated as, well as won, out many prestigious bar and bar staff awards nationally and also is competing in some international bar awards such as the World Class Cocktail Cocktail Competition. As for the bar itself, it’s simple, low-key, warmly lit interior, and relatively small bar is actually quite relaxing and shelters those inside from the hustle and bustle of the world outside.
Black Pearl offers an array of wine and beer, however where it really shines is in its cocktail list and the bar staff who make them. With a mix of old favorites, modern twists and in some cases something completely new, the cocktail list will surely have something to tickle your fancy. If you are feeling like something a little different, be sure to look at the specials board as it always offers up something you might not tried before. Finally if you feel lost amongst it all, the extremely skilled staff are more than happy to help with any queries.
The pricing is pretty standard amongst other cocktail bars in the city and the area. There is some food available, however it is only at the simple snack level and is just to satisfy a desire rather than offer something substantial. While it might be relaxing inside, the venue is actually quite small and can get quite crowded, especially on weekends, however if you get in early you will be sure to have a seat.
Final Thoughts:
When it comes down to it, what makes Black Pearl particularly special is that it is not trying to do too much or be something too complex. Its not trying to be a club or a restaurant, its a cocktail bar…and to be honest thats all it needs to be as it does that very well. When venturing out down Brunswick Street, be sure not to pass up a visit to Black Pearl as it will not disapoint.
