Review:
Cafe by day, bar by night, Lanes Edge offers no cocktail menu, no plush sofas or armchairs and the majority of the seating is in the beer garden out the back. But this doesn’t bother you when all you want is a simple drink and a table to sit around when catching up with friends. Lanes Edge excels at just that. Whilst there is no cocktail menu, there is a decent selection of bottled beers and spirits at cafe prices that the staff will happily tell you about.
Ideal for drinking on a summer’s night, when full of people the beer garden has a great atmosphere. The combination of table service by friendly staff, good music, fairy lights and foliage gives the feeling of drinking in South East Asia. Winter can make the idea of sitting in an outdoor area unattractive but when you’re dressed appropriately and they have the heaters on there is nothing to too much to complain about.
Lanes Edge is a bar to start the night as it is perfect for having a couple of drinks before moving onto more dancy places (such as Loop which is virtually next door). In fact the garden vibe makes it feel like you are having pre drinks at your mate’s place before heading out. And that is probably the biggest drawcard for this bar – its simplicity. Because lets face it, when it comes down to it, going to a bar is a social activity and what more do you need than some drinks and some good company. Oh and fairy lights. Don’t forget the fairy lights.
Final Thoughts:
Melbourne has its abundance of themed cocktail bars, event spaces and music venues. Lanes Edge cuts through all that, giving you a place that everyone can enjoy and have a good night out. It’s a bar that doesn’t take itself too seriously with a great atmosphere.
